GEORGE BROWN President
George Brown has served as President of MASS Environmental Services Inc. since founding the company alongside his wife, Marnie in 2001.
In this role, George acts as director of partnerships, technology, and business development for MASS while providing strategic leadership to the company. George’s leadership has been a crucial driving force of MASS’ growth and success since the company’s inception. Prior to founding MASS, George held numerous senior management roles in the automotive parts supply industry where he applied his systematic leadership expertise.
George holds an interdepartmental degree in Business Administration and Psychology from Brock University. George strongly believes in supporting communities and families, and has been involved in numerous initiatives over the years including coaching youth sports, backing community activities, and supporting the most recent Habitat for Humanity Build in Lakefield, Ontario.
George is known for his meticulous and unwavering work-ethic and inspires professionalism amongst his team. Well respected amongst his colleagues, George inspires an attitude of integrity and commitment amongst the entire MASS team. A dedicated family man, George is proud to have his son, Mac and daughter, Alex as a part of the MASS team, and through his standards for exceptional work, he leads MASS with an unparalleled spirit of innovativeness and authenticity.
MARNIE BROWN Vice-President
Marnie Brown has served as Vice-President for MASS Environmental Services Inc. since founding the company with her husband George in 2001.
Over the past 15 years, Marnie has led the development of a strong and uniquely skilled team.
Marnie is well renowned as a leader who inspires engagement and collaboration. Her passion for providing an unparalleled experience to MASS’ clients has been the foundation for MASS’ industry leading customer service.
Marnie possesses a Medical Diagnostic Imaging Radiology Diploma from the Michener Institute of Technology, and worked in the hospital setting for 20 years prior to founding MASS. This experience contributed to her focus on infection control which has made her a tremendous asset to MASS’ growth in the Long Term Care and Retirement industry.
With MASS’ emphasis on investment in our future, Marnie’s family focus is outstanding. Marnie and George are parents to two children – Mac and Alex, who have both joined the company. Their unwavering family values are a part of what distinctively characterizes their leadership style – one that is built upon trust, transparency and loyalty. Every day, Marnie guides her team and customers to make a difference. With the mantra of “Change begins with just one step,” as one of her guiding principles, Marnie’s tremendous work-ethic is a guiding force behind MASS’ success.
ALEX BROWN Operations Manager
Alex Brown is respected amongst her colleagues for her unparalleled drive and work ethic, which has led to her immense success with MASS Environmental Services Inc.
Alex attended Memorial University of Newfoundland where she earned a degree in International Business Administration as just one of eight members in her class to earn this degree. Alex also lived in France for 6 months where she studied at Grenoble École de Management.
Alex’s passion for travel has contributed to her immense adaptability and innovativeness, making her an asset to the Customer Service Department of MASS Environmental Services Inc. In addition to this role, Alex serves as a key figure within the business development sector of the company, overseeing hazardous waste, grease traps, used cooking oil services and more.
She began working with the company in the summers while still a student, travelling across the country completing waste audits. This experience allowed Alex to develop an exceptionally valuable expertise in waste diversion that she applies to her work with clients on a daily basis.
Whether Alex is exploring a foreign country, or working closely with her team in the MASS office, she is quick-on-her-feet, inventive, and inspires an attitude of optimism amongst those around her.
Alex is passionate about community building, and has volunteered with a number of local causes. She is an advocate for health and fitness, and is a crucial part of the award winning MASS Environmental Services Inc. team.
Carrying on with the sense of family focus that underlies much of MASS’ success, Alex is currently engaged to her fiancé, Nate Card, and will be getting married in the Summer of 2018. Alex and Nate look forward to a lifetime of adventure together, and believe in working to protect our environment in every way we can, in order to leave a thriving earth for the next generation.
MAC BROWN Business Development and Waste Audit Manager
Mac Brown is well-known for his entrepreneurial attitude and spirited nature.
Respected amongst his peers for the constructive and innovative nature he brings to the table, Mac inspires an exciting and positive energy amongst his team.
Mac began working with MASS in the summers throughout his time as a student, travelling across the country and participating in waste audits, in order to guide clients to waste diversion success. Upon completion of his degree, he joined the company full-time, where he is now a guiding force in Business Development and also spearheads the Waste Audit Division.
Mac studied at Mount Allison University, where he earned a Bachelor of Commerce Degree, while playing on the men’s varsity basketball team. During this time, he founded a professional sports agency representing professional athletes playing in North American and overseas. Mac sold this agency in 2015, and continues to explore his entrepreneurial initiatives in a variety of ways. In the past several years, Mac has developed a passion in real estate investment, with a strong focus on residential properties throughout the Province of Ontario. Mac looks forward to pursuing this interest with a future focus on sustainable living as we continue to move forward into the future.
Mac’s entrepreneurial spirit is exemplified most notably through his role in business development with MASS. This role has allowed Mac to maximize his strengths as a true “people-person,” bringing the wonderful economic benefits of environmental sustainability to fruition for businesses across Canada.
Mac is a “go-getter” with an exceptional work-ethic and unstoppable will-power. Working alongside his family and the rest of the MASS team, Mac shows initiative and dedication on a daily basis.
HEATHER VARNER Special Projects Manager
Heather Varner joined the MASS Environmental Services Inc. team in spring of 2014, and has grown with us since then into her current role as Special Projects Coordinator. Originally serving in our Customer Service department for over two years, Heather had the opportunity to develop an in-depth and thorough understanding of our clients daily operations from coast-to-coast, overseeing the waste diversion programs at over 1000 locations under the supervision of our leadership team. This expertise had led to her success in her current role, and in this position she has the opportunity to combine her in-depth knowledge of the MASS Environmental systems with her own sense of creativity in order to manage all communications operations within the organization.
Originally from Moncton, New Brunswick, Heather attended Mount Allison University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, History and Sociology. Her academic background has contributed to her life-long passion for the written word, and she has been featured in numerous publications including TIME, xoJane, and Hellion Magazine. She applies her capabilities as a writer and a communicator on a daily basis with MASS, spearheading our digital media presence including social media, client communication, newsletters, marketing material and more.
Heather also is able to apply her passion for teaching and engaging with others by developing training material for internal staff, working closely with our IT team on development of client education modules, and spearheading our co-operative education program with local high schools and colleges.
Heather is known for inspiring collaboration and cooperation amongst her colleagues, and is thrilled to be a part of a company that makes a positive difference every day.
JESSE MORING Administrative Manager
Jesse Moring joined the MASS Environmental Services Inc. team in the fall of 2017 in the position of Administration Manager. In this role, Jesse oversees our finance, information technology, and human resources departments as an invaluable member of our management team. With a meticulous eye for detail, Jesse brings an exceptional skillset to the team, as we work towards continuous growth and development.
In 2010, Jesse graduated from the Business Accounting program at Durham College, and holds his PCP designation with the Canadian Payroll Association. Committed to continuing education, Jesse pursues every opportunity for ongoing learning, and he plans to complete his CPM within the next year. Most recently, Jesse has worked with a software development company, overseeing payroll and benefits, and has completed staff accounting duties in a variety of roles. This diverse background has contributed to the development of his ability to handle any task that comes his way.
As he joins the MASS team, we are thrilled to recognize that Jesse shares our sense of family focus. In 2010, Jesse and his wife, Laurel, were married in Vegas by ‘Elvis.’ In 2015, they relocated from Durham region to Cobourg where they currently find themselves as-busy-as-can-be balancing home renovations with finding ways to entertain their three energetic sons: Oliver, Reid, and Sawyer. When they find the rare moment of spare time, Jesse and his wife enjoy taking in live music. As a family, they enjoy camping, hiking, and taking advantage of greenspaces that Mother Nature has to offer, contributing to Jesse’s passion for waste diversion and protecting our environment.
Jesse shares our commitment to community focus, and along with his wife has taken part in many charity events and is currently working on the development of a volunteer group that helps obtain swabs for the bone marrow registry at concerts.
RYAN MULLIGAN Information Technology Coordinator
Ryan Mulligan joined the MASS Environmental Services Inc. team in 2016 as Information Technologies Coordinator.
Originally from Montreal, Quebec, Ryan studied at McGill University, acquiring his Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science. He later went on to Concordia University, where he achieved a post graduate diploma in Journalism.
Follow his passion of technology into the workforce, Ryan began his career providing customer service and technical support to the McGill University community. He worked closely with administrators, educators and researchers to ensure that computers and other emerging technologies were being used to their maximum potential on campus.
In 2010, Ryan relocated to the Northumberland Hills in order to be closer to his family. Since moving to the area, he has held positions with some of Ontario’s leading tech firms.
Ryan brings his expertise and unique problem solving ability to the MASS team, allowing for the seamless integration of technology, giving MASS the right tools for success.
Ryan spearheads development of new technologies for the MASS team, including development of our online educational platform, internal digital communications, advancement in our waste audit technology and more. Through Ryan’s technological expertise, along with his strong academic background, he demonstrates a unique amalgamation of capabilities that make him a true asset to our team. Ryan brings new energy and insight to the company and MASS Environmental Services Inc. is thrilled to have him on board.
In his spare time, Ryan pursues his passion of Music. As an avid record collector, he likes to unwind by spinning vinyl on the turntable, playing guitar, or simply humming the latest earworm.
CARA BENTLEY Customer Service Coordinator
Cara Bentley joined the MASS Environmental Services Inc. team in 2016 in the capacity of Customer Service Coordinator.
Cara brings with her a strong background in client relations, and an innate talent for leadership coupled with a track record for effective problem solving and communication. Since joining the MASS team, Cara has developed a reputation amongst her colleagues for positivity and commitment to providing quality customer service at all times.
Having graduated with a degree in Environmental Studies from Carleton University in 2014, Cara has long-held a belief in the importance of protecting our planet. From the earliest days of her childhood, Cara was raised to be a global citizen; having been born in Alberta, raised in California for the first 6 years of her life, then settling in Ottawa with her family. This pattern of relocation opened Cara’s eyes at a young age to the beauty of the world around us, and our responsibility to do our part in protecting it. This has translated into her daily life and her commitment to sustainability. Cara is a believer in buying and eating local and always ensures everything she brings into her home, from the food she eats to the products she uses, are manufactured in a responsible way so as to be a participant in the circular economy.
Cara re-located to Cobourg upon joining the MASS family, and has since spent her spare time engaging in her passions of hiking and enjoying all that nature has to offer. As a true lover of the great outdoors, and a believer in the old adage that a day spent in the fresh-air is truly the “cure-all;” Cara spends her weekends finding the beauty in all four seasons and making the most of whatever weather Mother Nature hands us. Cara is a vegetarian and widely known as a friend to all animals.

ERIK VARNER Customer Service Coordinator
Erik Varner comes to MASS with a strong technical background in facilities and property management. Joining our team in 2017, Erik works closely with both our Audit and Customer Service Department, providing physical and technical support in wide-ranging capacities.
Respected for his level-headed attitude and drive to succeed, Erik is motivated by his passion for investment in the future. Committed to being a leader in sustainable action, Erik is a strong proponent of the MASS mantra, “Change Begins with Just One Step,” and carries this out in his daily life through intentional positive actions on a regular basis.
His passion for sustainability is most notably seen through his love of nature. Erik loves to fish, and as an East Coast native, has spent endless hours on the Atlantic Ocean over the years. Besides fishing, his hobbies include hiking and camping, and he looks forward to exploring the many trails and hiking paths that Northumberland County has to offer. Erik is thrilled to be a part of a team that combines environmental sustainability with cost-savings strategies, as this aligns perfectly with his own personal set of passions and beliefs.
Erik re-located to Cobourg in 2017 when he joined the MASS team, and looks forward to immersing himself in the community of Northumberland County. With a love for athletics, Erik is particularly interested in opportunities to become a part of the sporting community of the region, with a special passion for hockey and golf.

SAM PROWSE Waste Audit Technician
Sam Prowse has been with MASS Environmental Services Inc. in the role of Waste Audit Technician since spring of 2017. In this role, Sam works closely with our clients to maximize their waste diversion programs, travelling from coast-to-coast across the country completing over 300 waste audits on an annual basis. As a strong believer in economical and environmental sustainability, Sam brings a passion for investment in the future through intentional action, applying his commitment to meticulous data collection and analysis to waste audit reporting and waste reduction work plan development.
As a graduate of Mount Allison University, where Sam Prowse served as President of the Canadian Studies Society, and played on the Men’s Varsity Basketball team. Sam brings with him a natural skill-set for leadership and eagerness, adding a new level of energy to the Waste Audit team. In his experience with the Canadian Studies Society, Sam developed a thorough understanding of the value of protecting our future through sustainable action, and his love for the natural wonders of Canada motivates him on a daily basis.
Sam’s love for basketball and athletics continues to be a big part of Sam’s life, and as an advocate of health and fitness, Sam encourages everyone to connect with nature by getting outside and getting active as often as they can.
Sam is thrilled to be a part of the MASS team and is grateful to have this opportunity to continue growing with our company, demonstrating his commitment to integrity, accountability, and trust in everything he does. Sam fully encompasses our strong sense of family focus and community spirit, and through his unmatched energy and strong work-ethic, he is a true asset to our team.
KATIE NOYES Administrative Assistant
Katie Noyes first joined the MASS team in the fall of 2015, when she was a Grade 12 student at Lakefield District Secondary School. She came to MASS as a co-operative education student, participating in a credit-earning program, through which she sought out the opportunity to learn the ins-and-outs of office administration and gain real-world experience.
Katie’s role with MASS quickly blossomed because of her steadfast and mature demeanor, and eagerness to learn and grown. She joined our team in an administrative support capacity during the final semester of her secondary education, then transitioning into a full-time role with the team during the summer months prior to commencing her post-secondary education.
Now, as a student at Fanshawe College in London, ON, Katie continues to explore her talents as an administrative professional, and we readily welcome her back to our team whenever school is not in session. During the summer of 2017, she has joined us again, both as a full-time team member, but also to earn academic credit for her college education while providing our team with support in every way she can.
Well-respected for her confidence, and ability to take initiative and ownership over her work, Katie has become an invaluable member of the MASS team. She is level-headed, eager to learn, and immensely organized. In her role as Administrative Assistant, she provides administrative support to the MASS executive team, as well as providing support in the customer service department on a day-to-day basis. MASS is thrilled to have Katie continue to grow with us as she continues to develop her career.
