Mid-November is here, which means for many Canadian families, holiday preparations are well underway. In the hustle and bustle of this special season, it is easy to get caught up in the festivities
1. Re-Think Wrapping Paper
It’s a familiar sight to all of us … Crumpled up wrapping paper covering the entire living room floor. We load it into garbage bags for disposal and cringe inwardly at the excessive amount of waste that we have generated. It happens year after year, and we never make any changes – largely because we do not know where to begin!
This year, several members of our team have made the switch from disposable wrapping paper to re-usable gift boxes. These gift boxes are easily accessible for purchase in stores all around the country, and if you opt for a sturdy style, it will be able to be used year after year!
Another creative option is to utilize fabric bags for presents. If you are particularly crafty, you can sew these yourselves! Not only will these look beautiful under the Christmas tree, the gift recipient will have a beautiful bag to use again the following year.
Lastly, a third option is switching to recyclable craft paper to replace disposable wrapping paper. While we definitely encourage ‘re-use’ options before ‘recycle’ options in scenarios like this, utilizing recyclable craft paper will give you the opportunity to give your loved ones presents wrapped in a material that will not be destined for landfill!
2. Make Memories, Not Waste
We live in an era where consumerism seems to be at an all-time high. If you are looking for a gift for someone who already seems to have everything they need, could you consider gifting them an experience to make memories, rather than generating extra garbage caused by excess packaging!?
Consider an E-Gift Card to the movie theatre or their favourite restuarant … Or perhaps you could treat them to a massage or a spa day! If your friend is more adventurous, maybe offer to take
them rock-climbing or white water rafting.
Whatever it may be, the memories made together will last forever, and you won’t have to worry about material rotting in landfill for the same amount of time.
3. Plan Ahead for Leftovers
If you are hosting holiday dinners, leftovers are pretty much inevitable. But if you put together a plan of attack for how you’re going to handle them, you can significantly reduce the amount of food-waste generated by your household this holiday season. Do a web search for recipe tips for how to use your leftovers if you’re looking for ideas!
Another great idea is to purchase recyclable brown paper bags in advance of the holidays. If you’ll have children joining in your festivities, have them colour these bags as a craft activity. Then, when there are leftovers at the end of the dinner, each child gets to load up their decorated bag with the goodies of their choice, bringing the food home to eat it later, putting the food to it’s intended use of nourishment!
4. Give Back This Year
A community conscious way that will also support the planet during this gift-giving season is to make donations in the honour of your loved ones in place of their usual holiday gifts. This way, you don’t have to worry about waste, and you also have the opportunity to support a cause that is close to their heart.
We recommend limiting this option to loved ones who you know well enough to understand which causes are most important to them, in order to ensure the gift is received in the intended spirit of generosity.
5. When it Comes To Decor … UPCYCLE!
When walking through our shopping malls, the gorgeous and glittery holiday decorations that come out this time of year can be incredibly tempting. But so many of us already own plenty of holiday decor at home, that could be just as trendy if we put some time into repair and redesign. This year, rather than tossing the old and buying the new, think about how you could upcycle the decor that has been in the back corner of your basement collecting dust, to make your holiday decorations eco-conscious.
From our family to yours, we wish you a happy, healthy & safe Holiday Season! However you recognize this time of year, we wish you great joy & all the success in the new year.
Please Note: If you are a MASS client, we are still available to you 24 / 7 / 365 throughout the holiday season. Please contact us at anytime and a member of our team will always be happy to help!
