5Qs With Mac Brown

January 24, 2019 by Heather Varner Leave a Comment

We’ve celebrated and shared stories of several of our team members here on the MASS Blog over the past several months. Today, we are featuring one of our leaders who strives every single day to make a difference. Mac Brown, our Waste Audit Manager, answers 5 Questions about MASS & his role here with our team. Happy reading!

1. If you could describe a “Day In The Life” for you at MASS in just three words, what would they be?

Lots of travel.

I am very fortunate to be in a role with the waste audit team that brings me all over the province, and on some days the country! This gives me and my team the opportunity to see the beauty and diversity of our national landscape, which promotes our appreciation of the environment that we are working to protect every single day. We’ve gotten to see places like Lake Louise, Vancouver Island, Signal Hill in Newfoundland and so much more. We live in an incredible country and I’m grateful for the chance to explore it through work.

2. What do you do in your daily life to reduce your environmental impact?

I am an avid recycler. I work hard to make sure that anything within my household that can be recycled is. I am also very passionate about food-waste. In my home we ensure that none of our food waste ends up in landfill by using an at-home composter. We also meal-plan to minimize food waste in the first place. I continue to work to improve on the other two “R’s” – Reuse and Reduce! I am not perfect and definitely still have work to do on those two.

3. Tell us about working in a family business from your perspective of the “Second Generation.”

As I’m sure most of my family members would say, there is a balance of challenging days and rewarding moments. The truth is, ultimately the good always outweighs the bad. Our entire family really buys into our mission as a company and we share in the passion for sustainability. The opportunity to work day-in and day-out with my family and the people who are closest to me is not something I’d ever take for granted.

4. Tell us about your hobbies or interests outside of work.

My two primary hobbies outside of the office are: Basketball and Real Estate.

I played varsity basketball at Mount Allison University, and the sport continues to be a big part of my life. I am a huge fan of college basketball (both American and Canadian) and have attended many March Madness tournaments and games. I also enjoy the NBA … Go Raps!

I am also a real estate investor, and I spend the bulk of my free time evaluating properties. My work here at MASS gives me an awesome base to be a conscious investor with sustainable goals as a big part of my investment focus.

5. When you envision the future of Canada, how do you hope to see the waste industry evolve?

I believe many changes are needed within our industry to improve on true sustainability as well as cost structure. This is something I’m very passionate about and  I could go on for a very long time, so I’ll try to be concise.

First of all, I believe we need a national system in place. Currently, recycling is done at the municipal level which makes it confusing with different programs from town to town. This increases contamination and the quality of commodity our markets produce.

Second, with the global recycling crisis being brought on by China now accepting a minimal amount of imported recyclables, I believe we need to be heavily focused on a domestic recycling system with all material being processed right here in Canada. If done right, this will create jobs and decrease our environmental footprint. As a country, we should be the leader in responsible plastic recycling practices that would battle major problems like the plastic ocean.

My third and final point has to do with food-waste. One of the biggest issues we deal with at MASS is food-waste. The amount of food that is currently going to landfill is growing, and I believe that a landfill ban on food-waste should be implemented nation-wide. This already exists in numerous Canadian cities, and getting infrastructure in place to make this common practice across the country would have a monumental impact. This could also help to combat food shortage issues that we have, all while ensuring that we are not polluting this beautiful country we get to call home.

Telling Our Story – Meet Our Founders

December 5, 2018 by Heather Varner Leave a Comment

Telling Our Story is a new series of blog posts from MASS Environmental Services Inc., sharing the history of our team, our people, and how our company came to be. Each featured post of this series will introduce readers to a different part of the story that has brought us to where we are today. Our first post, Meet Our Founders features George and Marnie Brown, our President and Vice-President who’ve been leading MASS since the very start.

In 2001, George and Marnie Brown were a married couple with two kids, who’d recently moved to Lakefield, Ontario. Both having built successful careers – George in the corporate world, and Marnie in the healthcare field – they’d made a very bold choice. Together, they made the decision to launch MASS Environmental Services Inc., a company that would change the way that we think about waste.

Largely inspired by their personal sense of family focus, the pair looked at their two children – Mac and Alex – and wondered about the future of our planet and how it would impact the next

generation. They looked around at the beautiful country and the province in which they lived, and recognized that we, as Canadians, are so ‘nature-rich,’ that we can sometimes take it for granted. Looking ahead, they could see how this privilege could easily be lost in the future, if no body stepped up the the plate and made a difference.

So, Marnie and George set out to do just that. Driven by the mission to ‘Be The Change You Want To See In The World,’ they launched MASS Environmental Services Inc., with one key focus: To help Canadian businesses send less material to landfill through Waste Diversion.

The company has never wavered from this mission, nor has it wavered from the original set of company values that were embedded within the company from the very start. In fact, the company name itself, “MASS,” is an acronym standing for the first initial of the names of their son, Mackenzie, their daughter Alexandra, and their two nephews, Spencer and Sidney.

Marnie and George lead by example, exhibiting the MASS Values in everything they do. Family focus underlines the work-ethic of the entire company. This drives their motivation to leave a legacy of a more economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable future.

They are committed to maintaining a reputation for reliability and accountability, and ensuring a continued vested interest in the success of MASS clients, partners, and team members. These values form the structural integrity of every element of Marnie and George’s life, including the company.

From the earliest days of 2001 when the company was based out of their home in Lakefield, to a nationwide portfolio of clients being served out of our Cobourg, Ontario headquarters, the company has grown exponentially. Marnie and George have been at the helm of the ship every day of the journey.

In recent years, Marnie and George welcomed the second generation into the company. Their son and daughter, Mac and Alex, both completed their university education in 2014, and now hold management roles at MASS. Embodying everything that it means to be ‘family-owned-and-operated,’ the Brown family works closely every single day towards a purpose that is larger than themselves.

Looking back on the early days of MASS, it is incredible to recognize how far the company has come. Today, there are 13 individuals who

make up “The MASS Team,” and each of them contribute every single day towards a more sustainable future. MASS now provides a multitude of services to more than 1,000 businesses across the country including: Non-Hazardous Waste Services, Hazardous Waste Services, Biomedical Waste Services, Waste Audits, Confidential Shredding and Destruction, Used Cooking Oil Collection, Grease Trap Services, and Solid Waste Consulting Services.

The MASS team achieves: Cost Control, Education, and Compliance for our clients through the MASS Methodology, and continues to guide every single one of our locations to do the right thing.

At the beginning of every day, Marnie Brown reminds the team of the MASS motto: Change Begins With Just One Step. In the same way that we remind our clients of this, she reminds us. Every single one of us must hold ourselves accountable to take that single step, and do the right thing..

Marnie and George live and lead by example, not just ‘talking the talk,’ but by ‘walking the walk.’ Their leadership is what continues to make MASS successful, which allows us to achieve waste diversion success on behalf of our clients, and make a difference every single day.

Stay tuned to read more stories about the MASS team, our history,
and the pieces of the puzzle that have brought us to where we are today.

5Qs With Heather Varner

December 3, 2018 by Heather Varner Leave a Comment

We’ve celebrated and shared stories of several of our team members here on the MASS Blog over the past several months. Today, we are featuring our team member who is actually the writer of this blog itself. Heather Varner, our Special Projects Manager, answers 5 Questions about MASS & her role here with our team. Happy reading!

Hiking at Tom’s Thumb in Scottsdale, AZ

Q1. If you could describe a ‘day-in-the-life’ for you at MASS in just three words, what would they be?

Expect The Unexpected.

I say this, because every day is different. The variety that comes with my role as Special Projects Manager keeps things very exciting, and while this can be crazy at times it is always worth it. One day, I may find myself completing on-site education sessions for a hospital or a university; working with their staff to become more active recyclers. The next day, I might be compiling a cost-savings report for a client; quantifying for them their success through the MASS methodology. Some days you can find me supporting our Waste Audit Team, and on others, I am holed in up in our webinar room providing online education to our valued clients. I write blog posts, run our social media accounts, and complete internal staff education. I love working in a position where every day is different, because this allows me to have a positive impact in so many unique and exciting ways.

Q2. What has been the most rewarding moment of your work with MASS so far?

At MASS, we always say that we have a vested interest in the success of our clients. In that sense, their accomplishments are our accomplishments. This past summer, I completed an education series with our Waste Audit team prior to a set of annual audits for a client in the restaurant industry. At the end of the audits, their reports were compiled and I was ecstatic to see that their results had increased significantly. We are now working with them on implementation of organics programs for a number of their locations to divert food-waste from landfill, and I am so excited about supporting them in taking this next step forward. Without fail, anytime one of our clients achieves something positive like this, I am filled with pride in the work that we do.

Q3. How have you changed since working for MASS?

When I first came to MASS, it was my second career position after university, and I was still very unsure of what my path would be. I was excited for the opportunity to work for a company that was making a difference, but I had no idea what exactly my future with the company would entail. Now, I look back with immeasurable gladness for each opportunity the company has given me. I’ve been able to learn so much through my work at MASS and develop both on a personal and professional level.

I’ve always been a an advocate for the environment, and I believe a big part of this can be contributed to being raised with a deep respect for nature and the great outdoors. Since coming to MASS, and learning everything I have within the waste and recycling industry, I’ve become very big on an ‘applicable next steps focus.’ By this, I mean that when I am looking for strategies on how to be more environmentally friendly, I want them to be applicable, specific, and tangible items. When working with clients, I try to utilize this approach. I find this helps people to feel empowered and capable of taking responsibility over their own environmental footprint. So much of the messaging out there today about our environment is very ‘big picture thinking,’ which while incredibly valuable, can also be intensely overwhelming. I like to break things down into ‘bite-sized target actions’ that are possible to implement and apply on a daily basis.

Q4. What is it like working in a family business?

I might have a slightly unique answer on this question, because what many of our readers may not realize is that I am actually a soon-to-be member of the Brown family! In May 2019, I will be marrying Mac Brown, our Waste Audit Manager, the son of company founders, George and Marnie. Mac and I met in 2012, while both of us were students at Mount Allison University. After completing my degree, I worked for a year in my hometown of Moncton, New Brunswick before coming out to Ontario where I started with MASS. For me, working in a ‘family business’ has also always meant working for my ‘in-laws-to-be.’

This is undoubtedly a unique situation, but also one for which I am incredibly grateful. It is so special and rare to work towards a common goal with a group of people who are a part of every element of your life. The family focus on waste reduction is not just a part of our office environment, but also, our home environment. We are all avid recyclers and committed composters. Our holiday dinners always involve discussion of waste diversion, mixed in with the regular family updates and typical conversation.

Being a part of a family business, means that I never have to concern myself with ‘Work-Life’ balance. ‘Work’ becomes about so much more than the day-to-day. It’s about the legacy we are building as a family. ‘ And ‘Life’ is about family, relationships, and strengthening those bonds. With these two focuses, ‘Work’ and ‘Life’ create an incredible amalgamation that gives so much meaning to everything we do.

I was raised in an incredibly close-knit family, and this is something I’ve always wanted to continue to be a part of my life as I grow. I am glad that I get to work in a business where this value underlines absolutely everything we do. We always say that we are working to leave behind a healthy and thriving earth for the next generation, and I can’t think of anything more important for a family to work towards, than that.

Q5. At MASS, we always say “Change Begins With Just One Step.” What does this mean to you, and what role does it play in your life?

I love this motto and use it often with our clients. So often, people can feel overwhelmed in the face of climate change, and this is a great way to remind them that every single one of us holds power. Whether it’s bringing your own reusable coffee mug with you (starting TODAY!), saying ‘no thank you’ to a plastic straw at a restaurant (starting TODAY!), or bringing reusable bags to the grocery store (starting TODAY), we each have to take responsibility for our own environmental footprint. Each of these small impacts truly do matter.

I often encourage our clients to ask themselves the question “What can I do differently today?” and use that as their starting point to begin making a difference. I ask myself this same question nearly every morning, and not just when it comes to waste diversion. In any area of our lives where we are trying to make a change, grow, or improve, this question can be an incredible way to make self-development possible.

Whether it’s an obstacle you are trying to overcome, a skill you are working to develop, a relationship you are trying to strengthen, or a habit you are trying to break – this question can kick-start incredible change in every area of your life. Change begins with JUST one step. One little step is ALWAYS possible. What will yours be today?

5 Qs with Jesse Moring

September 4, 2018 by Heather Varner Leave a Comment

The Moring Family

Our Administration Manager, Jesse Moring has a big role to fill here at MASS! Since joining our team in October 2017, he has become a crucial asset to what we do. In his position, Jesse is responsible for Accounts Receivable and Payable, Human Resources, and Information Technology – which means that he keeps very, very busy!

When Jesse goes home at the end of the day, the busyness definitely doesn’t stop!  Jesse, and his fantastic wife Laurel are parents to three adorable young boys, and are actively involved in their community.

In recognition of all that Jesse does, we wanted to take this opportunity and celebrate him and his hard work.  Keep reading for “5 Questions with Jesse Moring,” and CLICK HERE to learn more about him and the rest of our team!

Q1. What first sparked your interest in working for MASS Environmental Services Inc.?

I first applied for after a recommendation that the Brown’s were looking to fill a position with someone with my skill set and background. The person who recommended the position to me also told me how wonderful the family is, which was great to hear. I quickly became interested in learning more. After meeting George and Marnie (our President and Vice-President), I started to really see how it could be a great fit. The passion they both show for their work is contagious, and after that first meeting, I was able to develop a better grasp of what MASS offers, and who MASS is as a team, and family, I knew it would be a fantastic place to work.

Q2. What do you like to do outside of work?

Lately, most of my ‘outside-of-work’ hours have been devoted to renovating our house. When we aren’t busy renovating, my wife, Laurel and I enjoy relaxing together and playing board games. Of course, this is all in-between taking the kids to their baseball and jujitsu practices. Parenting definitely keeps us busy!

Q3. When you envision how Canada will evolve as we move into the future, what do you hope to see change (in terms of waste, recycling, and environmental initiatives) for our country?

When I look to the future of Waste Diversion in Canada, I believe more people will become aware of their own impact. Individually, we each have a role to play, and we should be trying our hardest to minimize our footprints. I know a lot of people tend to think their individual environmental impact is too small to make a difference, but this could not be further from the truth. Large changes are made up of many smaller ones coming together. As Canadians, I hope we can shift our perspective to see that that every little bit helps, no matter how small.

Q4. What have you learned or how have you changed since working for MASS?

The world of waste and recycling is a system that is vital to everyone, but not something that many of us actually spend time thinking about.

The Moring Family

Since I have started working for MASS I have learned, and am still learning how this system operates. This is a part of each of our daily lives, and something we each should make an effort to become more educated on, in order to do our part for sustainability.

Q5. What is it like working in a family business?

Having a young family of my own, it is interesting to also get to experience the dynamic of working in a family business. My experience with MASS has really brought home what a “team” should be. Family is a huge part of who I am, and working in an environment where everyone is on the ‘same team’ in the way that a family is, is a very special experience, and one that I am glad to be a part of!

The Happy Couple – Nate & Alex Card

Just after 3:30 PM on Saturday, July 14th 2018, MASS President George Brown walked his daughter, Alex down the aisle to marry the love of her life, Nate Card. Bidding Adieu to Sibling Rivalry – 5 Tips from Alex and Mac Brown

March 6, 2018 by Heather Varner Leave a Comment

As a family owned and operated business, MASS Environmental Services Inc. has been navigating the peaks and valleys of working side-by-side with the ones you love most since 2001. Today, the second generation of the Brown clan has become a key force within the company, with Mac (age 26) and Alex (age 25) both holding management roles based out of our Cobourg, Ontario headquarters.

Alex is our Operations Manager, which means she oversees the daily services for over 1,000 locations across Canada including Non-Hazardous Waste, Hazardous Waste, Confidential Shredding, Grease Trap Services, and Used Cooking Oil Collection. On top of this, she provides executive support in all contract negotiations, while managing our team of customer service coordinators who report to her.

Mac is our Waste Audit Manager, which means he leads the audit team to complete over 250 24-Hour Waste Audits each year from coast-to-coast. This requires consistent travel and strong client communication, followed by intensive data management in the report compilation when he returns back to the office. In addition, he provides executive support on business development, working on the continuous growth of MASS year-over-year.

In other words, … Mac and Alex are both busy young professionals with a lot on their plate. For many people, this could translate into stress, irritability, and the tendency to take it out on your easiest target. And who could be easier than a sibling? You grow up side by side as best friends one minute, and sparring the next! But somehow, Alex and Mac have found a way to put aside the complications that haunt many sibling relationships and make theirs work – in AND out of the workplace. Here’s how:

Tip # 1 – Never Forget Your Common Goals

“We both want the same things for the company, even when we don’t necessarily agree on how to get there,” shares Mac. Both Brown siblings agree that consistently reminding themselves that they both have the best interests of the company (and each other) in mind at all times, helps them to put traditional sibling rivalry on the backburner.

“When you are working towards the same end-goal, you are team mates. Team mates respect one another, and work cohesively to get to where they are going,” Alex adds, with Mac nodding along.

If you can share a common goal, and keep this in mind, you will always know the other person is on your side. Keeping this mindset at the forefront is key to eliminating rivalry.

Tip # 2 – Accept Your Natural Competitive Nature – & Embrace It!

“I think it’s natural for both of us to want to be the very best at whatever we are doing in any given situation,” Alex explains. “We are competitive by nature, and this can turn into a sort of sibling rivalry.”

But Alex and Mac have developed a unique mindset that allows them to reframe that sense of rivalry. Rather than rejecting it, they accept that a certain level of rivalry is healthy, and maybe even a good thing.

“If knowing Alex is doing well brings out a competitive side of me, and motivates me to push myself further, I don’t necessarily see that as a bad thing,” adds Mac. “We use a healthy dose of sibling rivalry to hold ourselves to a certain standard We both expect ourselves to do well, so that we can live up to the bar that the other has set. It’s cyclical, and keeps us moving onward and upward.”

Tip # 3 – Just Say “No” to Resentment

Accepting a certain level of sibling rivalry is all well and good, but what do you do when it escalates? Mac and Alex have a simple but effective strategy. They simply say “No” to resentment, and insist upon enjoying one another’s successes.

“In our situation, we’ve both learned to control our emotions. We’ve learned to reject feelings of negativity or jealousy that could arise in seeing someone else succeed,” Mac explains. “We just don’t let ourselves feel that way,” Alex adds, elaborating, “We make the choice to be happy for one another every single time we achieve something exciting, no matter how small.”

By enjoying one another’s successes, rather than being envious, Mac and Alex have found a way to multiply the joy that comes with achieving their goals, creating a stronger bond of comradery as both co-workers and family.

Tip # 4 – Third Party Accountability Checks

Disagreements are natural in a sibling relationship, especially one where you are working together every single day. However, if they do disagree about how a certain project should be approached, Mac and Alex typically are able to communicate openly with one another to find a resolution. If this doesn’t happen, however, they have a solution.

“As young adults, we obviously do not want to have to go to our parents about our disagreements on a regular basis, however in the rare situation that we cannot come to an agreement, we’ve learned that talking it out with them as a neutral third party can be the exact mediation tool we need to find a solution,” Mac says.

“Exactly,” Alex agrees. “Our parents are great about not feeding us the solution directly, but instead just being an open listening ear that allows us to voice our concerns in a neutral environment. Having a neutral third party to hold us accountable really helps in the rare situation where we cannot figure it out for ourselves.”

Tip # 5 – Have Fun Together

‘All work and no play’ is a recipe for disaster. With siblings, it is important to have fun together and reconnect – after all, they were probably your first playmate as a child, and there’s no reason you can’t let loose together and have fun as friends now too!

“It’s essential for me that Alex and I never allow our relationship become one of just co-workers. She’s my sister first, and I never want to lose sight of that. So scheduling in time together outside of work to enjoy one another’s company is really important to keep our relationship strong and healthy,” Mac explains.

Alex clearly agrees, stating: “Spending time with one another outside of the office allows us to come back to work feeling positive and refreshed. Laughing together, and having fun together is key to working together, and being productive together. They go hand in hand.”

And there you have it! Mac and Alex Brown, our Waste Audit Manager, and Operations Manager from MASS Environmental Services Inc. have shared their tips for working cohesively and cooperatively as both siblings and co-workers in a close-knit environment. Do you have any ideas on how to maximize either your work or family relationships? Leave a comment below and let us know what has worked for you!
